Membership Sub-Committee

The Membership Sub-Committee reports to the Chief Executive Officer of the CHEO Research Institute on issues of policy or strategy relating to Membership. Such items for presentation to the membership would be tabled for review by an Ah Hoc RI Committee as the need arises. This sub-committee reviews applications for membership in the C.H.E.O. Research Institute. They make recommendations to the Chief Executive Officer of the Research Institute regarding the applicant's eligibility for membership and the category of membership in keeping with Research Institute By-Laws. Upon approval of these recommendations by the Chief Executive Officer, the applications are submitted to the C.H.E.O. Research Institute Board  for final approval. Discrepancies can be tabled for discussion at an Ad Hoc Committee meeting of the RI if required.

The objectives of membership in the CHEO-RI are to:

  • Develop areas of research excellence and research groupings in child and youth health
  • Develop and nurture a culture of research at CHEO
  • Promote CHEO as an institution that values and supports research as an integral component of clinical care
  • Increase innovative research partnerships and collaborations
  • Develop a research mentoring capacity within CHEO
  • Strengthen links with the University of Ottawa research community
  • Promote national and international collaborations

Principles underlying membership guidelines in relation to these objectives:

  • Membership in the RI must be based on research excellence for established staff or promise for junior staff; it should also encourage participation of people who are supportive of research at CHEO, but whose day-to-day occupations or training does not permit an extensive involvement in research activities; membership categories should reflect this aim.
  • Excellence should be assessed by a person’s publication track record and his/her ability to get external research funding, as appropriate for his/her experience and seniority.
  • Membership should be inclusive of interested investigators dedicated to research in child and youth health at the University of Ottawa and beyond, whether or not their primary appointment is at CHEO; the special relationship of the CHEO-RI to the University of Ottawa should be acknowledged in membership categories.
  • Membership should be reviewed on a regular basis (e.g. 5 years) to ensure that there is continued excellence and interest on the part of members.

Membership Application Forms in the Funding & Forms sections of this website. The Membership categories approved by the Research Coordinating Committee are as follows:

There are 5 categories of membership:

Senior Investigator

CHEO and University of Ottawa staff with an established and continuing research track record as an independent investigator.

Investigator

CHEO and University of Ottawa staff who show promise of becoming Senior Investigators (tenable for a maximum of up to 7 years, with a possible two-year extension to recognize special circumstances).

Associate Investigator

CHEO staff members interested in research.

Adjunct Investigator

Collaborators from other institutions, nominated by a Senior Investigator or an Investigator.

Honorary Members

As proposed by the Membership Committee to the RCC from time to time to recognize important past contributions to the CHEO-RI.

There will be periodic review of members in each category.*

The Membership Committee will work collaboratively with the Professional Practice Leaders and the Operations Directors at CHEO in matters related to appointments to membership in the Research Institute.

Senior Investigator, Investigator and Associate Investigator members of the CHEO-RI whose primary appointment is at CHEO, will be eligible to apply for research space.

*
For Members who hold an appointment in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Ottawa (every 7 years for experienced investigators, see Regulations), the two reviews should coincide whenever possible. For Associate Members, the review should be up to seven years, for Adjunct Members, there should be regular reviews (through the nominator) to ensure that the collaboration still exists, at a minimum every five years. Honorary Members have a lifetime appointment.
