Understanding Energy Expenditure and Exercise in Children with Structural, Rhythm and Contractile Heart Problems

Children with heart problems are much more sedentary than their peers, even when they have similar or better exercise capacity. Research suggests that some heart defects may improve exercise capacity because the muscles become accustomed to working with reduced amounts of oxygen in the blood. Other research suggests that sedentary lifestyles result from energy deficits, either decreased intake or increased energy demand. This project will retrospectively evaluate the exercise capacity and growth of children with structural, rhythm or contractile heart problems to evaluate the frequency of energy deficit among children with heart problems requiring on-going care.
