Diagnostic Imaging Department
2nd floor of CHEO
The Department of Diagnostic Imaging is one of the largest patient service units at CHEO. There are approximately 117,000 exams performed each year in the department. CHEO Diagnostic Imaging is a referral center that includes Ottawa, Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, Nunavut and parts of Northern Ontario.
CHEO’s MRI unit contains two fully equipped 1.5 Tesla General Electric MR Units that received upgrades in 2010. This unit has a sedation area adjacent to it which can provide general anesthesia for our pediatric population. One of the magnets is equipped with a Cinema Vision system, which allows young children to watch a movie during their MRI procedure and reduce the use of anesthesia.
The ultrasound area houses six ultrasound machines. Nuclear Medicine has two nuclear medicine dual-headed Spect cameras and a DXA, which is used for BMD studies.
The unit also has state-of-the-art Philips digital radiography equipment and a multipurpose room for interventional procedures. Diagnostic Imaging also has a Philips fluoroscopy room and a 64 slice Siemens CT scanner.
The department is proud of its technologists, who are specially trained in pediatrics and interact with children in a friendly environment. They are also trained to ensure that the lowest possible amount of ionizing radiation is used in DI.
