Be Sweet to Babies during Immunizations—Showing the Evidence
We are producing a new and revised video showing analgesic effects of breastfeeding and sucrose during infant immunizations. This will be posted onto YouTube for widespread dissemination. To maximize accessibility, we aim to produce the video in multiple languages in addition to English and French, including Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Cree, Inuktitut, Hindustani and American Sign Language.
We are recruiting parent Facebook groups to help us to widely disseminate the video and its accompanying brief survey, through the CHEO Facebook page.

Sucrose Practices for Pain in Neonates (SPiN): Part B
This is a multi-site, multi-phase study led by Dr Bonnie Stevens (SickKids and University of Toronto). Recently, we completed the first part of the study (SPiN Part A: Determining the Minimally Effective Dose of Sucrose for Procedural Pain in Infants) which determined that the lowest amount of sucrose needed to manage babies’ pain is 0.1 mL. Part B of this program of research has 2 studies:
Study 1 (Efficacy of Repeated Sucrose Administration, Infant Response to Administration, and Effect on Outcomes) will examine the effect of repeated administration of the minimally effective dose of sucrose (0.1 ml) on immediate (pain intensity) and long-term (neurodevelopmental) outcomes in babies born at <32 weeks gestational age and hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
Study 2 (Influence of Practice Context Factors on Sucrose Administration Practices) will use a staff survey to explore the influence of contextual factors on nurses’ sucrose administration practices in NICU.
This study is recruiting preterm babies (<32 weeks) during the first 10 days of life as well as nurses in NICUs at CHEO and The Ottawa Hospital General Campus. Currently we have recruited 12 babies and we are seeking to recruit 28 more. We have recruited nearly 40% of our NICU staff, so are aiming to continue recruiting to our nursing staff survey.

Be Sweet to Toddlers during needles: RCT of sucrose compared to placeboThis study aims to determine whether giving toddlers (ages 12 to 36 months) 24% sucrose by mouth is effective in reducing their pain during venipuncture, compared to water. This study is recruiting patients from the medical and surgical inpatient units at CHEO (4E, 4W, 5E). Currently we have enrolled 17 toddlers with the goal to enroll a total of 140.

Caring for Babies: A Study of Ontario Maternal-Newborn Hospitals on the Effectiveness of Parent-targeted Education (ONesiE) This provincial cluster RCT seeks to determine if a parent-targeted intervention delivered at the organizational level results in changes in care of newborn babies during newborn screening. Too many trials? Cumulative meta-analysis of sweet solutions for pain treatment in infants.This systematic review aimed to review trials evaluating sweet solutions for analgesia in infants and to conduct a cumulative meta-analyses (CMA) on behavioral pain outcomes. Breastfeeding for procedural pain in infants beyond the neonatal periodCurrently there is no ongoing systematic review of breastfeeding for pain management during all painful procedures beyond the neonatal period (first 28 days of life). This systematic review aims to establish the effectiveness of breastfeeding on procedural pain in infants beyond the neonatal period up to one year ofage, undergoing painful procedures, compared to no intervention, placebo, parental holding, breast or formula milk, oral sucrose or glucose, distraction or other interventions. Caring for Babies during the Newborn Screening Blood Test: How do Parents Help? A Pilot RCTThis pilot 2-armed randomized controlled trial will inform all aspects of a full-scale trial of a parent-targeted knowledge to action (KTA) intervention. This pilot study has already enrolled the target 100 parents in the mother baby unit at The Ottawa Hospital General Campus. We are currently analyzing our data and look forward to sharing it with health care providers and parents of newborn babies. Be Sweet to Babies: A Social Media Evaluation of a Neonatal Pain Reduction Video Posted on YouTube This study aims to evaluate the effect of a parent-targeted knowledge translation intervention (the BSweet2Babies video) posted on YouTube. The goal ofthe study is to assess the reach, acceptability and effect of the BSweet2Babies video showing breastfeeding, skin-to-skin care and sucrose during blood sampling on intention to recommend the video or advocate for use of the interventions.
