Current Research:
Dr. Duffy is the principal investigator for a national study called “LEAP” (Linking Exercise, Activity and Pathophysiology) in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: A Canadian Collaborative Team, involving 12 pediatric centres. In Canada, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) afflicts approximately 10,000 children and youth, causing pain, disability and long-term joint and bone damage. The research study aims to uncover the factors specific to children with JIA that affect their ability to participate in physical activities and the barriers to such participation. The study also aims to determine how varying levels of physical activity affect the inflammation of arthritis and its effects on the developing bones and muscles, of children with JIA. Dr. Duffy is also a co-investigator on other national studies involving youth with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). They include studies which seek to: (1.) gain a rich understanding of how children with JIA and their parents acquire new information on JIA, including the barriers they face when seeking this information, the information they feel is most important and useful to them, and their awareness and attitudes towards research; (2.) develop a web-based, peer support program for teens with JIA; or (3.) gain a better understanding regarding the differences between adult Vasculitis and childhood Vasculitis so that treatment for children/teens who are living with this disease can be improved. Dr. Duffy is also part of a national registry that is gathering information on JIA, which will be used to help rheumatologists better understand and treat JIA.
