Kusum Menon
Senior Scientist, CHEO Research Institute
Physician, Division of Critical Care, CHEO
Associate Professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa

Research Practice Areas:
Current Research:

Dr. Menon’s research includes the STRiPES Program – a multi-stage program aimed at studying the role of steroids in pediatric critical illness and shock. Work to date has included defining the problem in a large critically ill patient population, surveying clinicians’ perceptions of the problem, and conducting a systematic review of the existing literature. Presently, Dr. Menon is conducting a pilot randomized controlled trial of steroids versus a placebo in pediatric shock. The final goal of this program is to help clinicians develop a consistent approach to the use of steroids in children with fluid and vasoactive infusion-dependent shock.

Dr. Menon’s consent research program is aimed at exploring the consent process in pediatric critical care research, in order to identify and work through existing barriers.

Research Team:
Dr. Menon is a Senior Clinical Investigator at the CHEO Research Institute, and an Associate Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Community Medicine at the University of Ottawa. She has a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and has won numerous awards for research and research mentorship. She is also a member of the Executive of Canadian Critical Care Trials Group, an internationally recognized critical care research network with over 120 high impact peer-reviewed publications. She has recently completed two Canadian Institutes of Health Research-funded multi-centre trials in pediatric critical care, which have resulted in two high-impact publications. Dr. Menon was the recipient of the CHEO Outstanding Investigator Award in 2013. Recently, she was appointed to a Tier 2 University Research Chair with the University of Ottawa.
