Research Practice Areas:
Current Research:
Dr. Murto’s research projects are related to the proper dosing of celecoxib, a COX-2 specific inhibitor NSAID, in children, for the management of post adentonsillectomy (T&A) pain. The clinical trials in this research incorporate the evaluation of blood and cerebrospinal fluid pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenomics related to the drug’s metabolism. This drug is opioid sparing, which is important because many children undergoing T&A suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and are very sensitive to the respiratory depressant affects of opioids. As a result, Dr. Murto’s research team is developing a clinical prediction tool to diagnose OSA in this population of children.
