Current Research:

Dr. Johnston’s research activities focus on pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML), palliative care in pediatric oncology, pediatric neuro-oncology, and phase I studies for pediatric oncology patients.

Research Team:
Dr. Donna Johnston is a Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and is the Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology. She is a full Professor at the University of Ottawa. She completed medical school at Queen's University, pediatric residency at the University of Ottawa, and fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. She returned to Ottawa in 2001 to join the staff at CHEO. Her oncology expertise is an AML, neuro-oncology, supportive care and palliative care. Dr. Johnston is a researcher at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute and is the Principal Investigator on a melatonin phase 1 study and the Vice Chair of a Children's Oncology Group phase 2 study on Nilotinib in chronic myeloid leukemia. She is the past Chair of the COG Palliative Care and Quality of Life Committee, a member of the Cancer Control Steering Committee and a member of the Acute Myeloid Leukemia steering committees at COG. Her current research focuses included melatonin in oncology patients, extramedullary AML and oncology supportive and palliative care. She is the author of over 100 peer reviewed publications, 6 book chapters, and has presented her research at many international and national meetings.
