Internal Funding
Investigators and Associate Investigators,
of the Research Institute, who are applying as principal
investigators, are eligible to apply for internal
funding for one year. The Research Institute funds 3 types
of grants: Feasibility/Start-up Grants up to $30,000/year/project;
Summer Studentships at the CIHR rate; Student/Resident Grants
up to $2,500, and Top-up/Matching Grants as specified below.
The Research Institute holds 1 competition annually
for funding Feasibility/Start-up Grants. The competition date
is July 1st. The competition is open to Investigator
and Associate Investigator Members of the Research
Institute, who are applying as principal investigators. Senior
Investigators, or CHEO-RI members whose primary appointment
is at the University of Ottawa, can be co-applicants
for the purpose of mentoring.
Top-up/Matching Grants are available to Investigator
and Associate Investigator Members who have received
external peer-reviewed funds. Matching Grants include only
applications to external agencies who require “matching”
as part of their policy, and to agencies whose maximum would
clearly not be sufficient to complete a required project.
Matching applications meeting this criteria will only be accepted
for consideration if the project and total budget(s), as submitted
externally, are forwarded to the CHEO Research Institute simultaneously
to external application submission, for review by Science
Sub-Committee. This review will include a detailed review
of the budget(s). Applicants may apply for the lesser
of $30,000 or equivalent amount
of external funding per project. Investigators and
Associate Investigators are eligible for one
Top-up/Matching award per calendar year. Applications submitted
to the CHEO R.I. after submission to external agencies will
not be considered. Amounts available, 50% with a maximum of
$30,000 per project will remain unchanged. These funds may
be applied for at any time.
Funding for projects can only be guaranteed for one year.
In exceptional circumstances, after consulting with the Research
Institute Director, projects that may require funding beyond
one year will be considered for review.
Summer Studentship applications are received in December.
Resident/Student project applications may be submitted at
any time. Application forms are available from the Research
Institute office.
