The Toronto Charter for Physical Activity: A Global Call for Action was launched on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the 3rd International Congress for Physical Activity and Health in Toronto Canada during the closing plenary session.

The Toronto Charter is a call to all countries to help make physical activity a priority for all.  The Charter provides a framework for action and partnerships across multiple sectors and with communities to build healthier, active, environmentally sustainable communities. It is a result of two years of international drafting and large scale global consultation. The global consultation received responses from over 400 individuals and organizations from 55 countries and provided over 1,700 comments and suggestions.

The Toronto Charter was ratified by delegates at the 3rd International Congress for Physical Activity and Health with overwhelming support for its call to all countries to seek greater political commitment, resources and community action to support health enhancing physical activity for all.  The Charter itself is an advocacy tool, designed for use with decisions makers and to build partnership towards achieving political commitment and resources towards increasing participation in health-enhancing physical activity throughout the world.

January 2010 – Congratulations to Rachel Colley (PI) and Meghann Lloyd (CI) on their recent grant success through the CHEO Research Institute grant competition! The grant title is: "Understanding the factors that enable or inhibit physical activity engagement in obese and non-obese children."  This study will measure four key domains that influence physical activity (fitness, motor skills, self-efficacy and preferences) in a group of obese and healthy weight children (n= 60) to better understand how we can promote activity in a population that has to-date proven difficult to engage. We intend to use this information to inform the design of future physical activity interventions aimed at obese children and to move away from the 'one size fits all' approach that is currently failing these children.

BIG NEWS! DR. MARK TREMBLAY RUNS WITH THE OLYMPIC TORCH!

The HALO team is very proud to announce that our own director, Dr. Mark Tremblay, was a Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torchbearer, and ran with the torch on Saturday, December 12, 2009 in the Byward Market in Ottawa. Many members of the HALO team as well as Mark’s family were honoured to cheer Mark on at this momentous occasion.

Mark was also featured in an Ottawa Citizen article which included his inspiring quote:  “Carrying the torch is symbolic of what is right in the world. It has this transcending power that inspires people. Twelve-thousand people will be carrying the torch. For some it will be a transient episode, but for some it may be life-changing, and there aren’t that many things in the world that have that positive an aura around them. It's something that touches very deep into the soul about the importance of good in the world and striving for your best -- trying hard and believing in yourself -- and all these good things you want to convey to your children and the people around you. I think it's all captured in that.”  See pictures
