Dr. Holcik trained at Univerzita Komenského (Bratislava,
Slovakia; RNDr. 1990) and Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada;
Ph.D. 1995). He pursued his postdoctoral training at Howard
Hughes Medical Institute (Philadelphia, U.S.A) working in
the laboratory of Dr. Stephen A. Liebhaber on the stability
of a-globin mRNA (1995-1996), and later in the laboratory
of Dr. Robert G. Korneluk (Children’s Hospital of Eastern
Ontario, Ottawa; 1996-2000) investigating the Inhibitors of
Apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins. Following his postdoctoral
training Dr. Holcik worked as a Scientist in Apoptogen, Inc.
(2000-2001) before he joined the staff at the Children’s
Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute and newly formed
Apoptosis Research Center.
Dr. Holcik has been
awarded several awards including the Cooley’s Anemia
Foundation (U.S.A.) Research Fellowship (1996), Medical
Research Council of Canada Fellowships (1998, 2000), the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator
award (2001), Premier's Research Excellence Award
(2004), and most recently the University of Ottawa
Faculty of Medicine Young Researcher Award (2007) and
the University of Ottawa Young Professor Award (2007).
