CHEO Research Institute Research Programs
Molecular Biomedicine
Message from Program Director, Dr. Martin Holcik
Molecular Biomedicine program represents an exciting and
dynamic group of scientists who share common interests in
advancing the health of our children through research. Within
the Molecular Biomedicine program, the Apoptosis
Research Centre and the Infectious
Disease and Vaccine Research Centre, take advantage of
advanced biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular genetics,
and proteomic technologies to identify new targets and therapeutic
approaches for the treatment of various disorders including
diabetes, neuromuscular disorders, infectious diseases, and
cancer. A strong “bench-to-bedside” or translational
value to the experimental approaches has been and will remain
a strong element of our research. In addition to a superb
research environment, the Molecular Biomedicine program provides
an excellent training setting for students at all levels and
postdoctoral fellows, as most of the principle investigators
are cross-appointed to basic science departments at the University
of Ottawa. The research groups are well supported by high
levels of funding from government sources, charitable organizations
and the private sector. I am thrilled to be involved with
this talented group of dedicated researchers and look forward
to both the challenges and the achievements that the future
will bring.
